Vocational Training and Employment Centres (VTEC)

Maxima is a key partner in a national network of Vocational Training and Employment Centres (VTECs) that is bridging the employment gap for Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander peoples.

The VTEC network is one of the main outcomes of an Indigenous employment campaign started a decade ago by Mining Industry leader Andrew Forrest, who set up GenerationOne (so named because it seeks to close the gap in one generation).

GenerationOne developed a unique training and employment model, designed to give Aboriginal people the best chance of making their way into the workforce.

With strong financial backing from the Federal Government, the model has been rolled out across the country since 2014 with the establishment of 24 Vocational Training and Education Centres (VTECs).

Many employers have also strongly supported the VTEC program, identifying positions for Indigenous jobseekers that are guaranteed to be available for the right candidate.

VTEC is more than just an employment agency. The support VTEC staff provide to jobseekers is widespread. Staff help jobseekers to gain the skills and work experience they need, including literacy and numeracy support and obtaining licenses. Staff provide a holistic approach by considering any health and wellbeing issues that may interfere with the jobseekers ability to begin employment. Once jobseekers are successfully employed, a VTEC Consultant will provide hands-on support and mentoring for up to six months, ensuring the best long-term outcome for everyone.

Maxima is the exclusive VTEC provider in South Australia and one of the most successful providers around the country. Maxima has helped more than 300 Indigenous jobseekers into the workforce, ranking Maxima second best nationally in terms of the number of placements.

VTEC leader, Natasha Christie, says Maxima works hard to get out into the community every day, seeking out potential jobseekers and employers.

“We often work with people who face serious barriers to gaining work and really need a lot of help. But we have helped so many people access opportunities that would never have been open to them if it wasn’t for the VTEC program.”
