Building a career – there’s more in store for Greg

Greg, a popular storeman who enjoys a joke and a laugh with his workmates, says helping people and having fun are the best parts of his job.

Securing a role with SA Building Supplies with the help of Maxima’s Disability Employment Services, Greg is highly sought-after by his co-workers and customers alike.

Greg overcame some challenges on his path to the rewarding job, where he is responsible for pre-packing orders and stocking the trade counter ready for the influx of busy tradies visiting the business each day.

“My favourite part of the job is working with other people and helping people out,” Greg says.

“They’re very friendly – great people to work with. We have laughs and give each other a hard time – that’s what having fun is all about at work,” Greg says.

Store Manager Kristian says having Greg on the team is “fantastic – he’s a highlight of the day – he’s such a joy to be around.”

“I don’t think that having a disability disadvantages anyone,” Kristian says.

“We basically break down the tasks to manageable pieces and build from there.

“We actually have customers hunt Greg down to say hello.”

Maxima employment support consultant Jamie says Greg has come a long way since starting his journey to employment.

“When Greg came to us he was quiet, he was shy, he lacked confidence and self-esteem,” Jamie says.

“Greg has worked with me on a regular basis and I continue supporting him in his current role.”

Maxima helps Greg with ongoing support, coaching and upskilling – including studying for his goal of obtaining his forklift licence.

“The job gives me independence and I’m getting out of the house,” Greg says.

“I recommend jobseekers have a talk with Maxima,” Greg says. “They’ve helped me all the way … thank you Maxima.”
