Joshua, a young school leaver from Huonville, Tasmania joined Maxima’s NDIS Youth Employment (formerly School Leaver Employment Supports) Program in October 2023. When he started, he had limited skills and experience but with the assistance of Maxima consultant Delecia, he has achieved significant milestones on his path to employment.
Over the past year, Joshua has worked with Delecia to build his employability skills including interview skills, resume writing, and cover letter preparation. Maxima’s support extended beyond job preparation, connecting Joshua with the Local Gearing Up program to help him log valuable driving hours. By passing his provisional driving test, Joshua’s confidence and independence have been boosted.
Building Experience through Volunteering and Work Placements
Maxima arranged a volunteer position for Joshua at the Kingston Library to develop his skills further. Delecia provided hands-on support for the first six weeks, which helped Joshua settle into his role, where he now volunteers independently, managing his tasks with growing confidence.
Joshua’s journey continued as he embarked on a six-week work experience placement at Wisby Buses in Margate, a family-owned business serving the Kingborough and Channel areas for over 45 years. At Wisby Buses, Joshua has been learning the intricacies of bus maintenance and cleaning while gaining an appreciation for the daily operations that keep the fleet running smoothly. Working alongside experienced staff has also helped Joshua build confidence in communication and teamwork.
Overcoming Challenges and Looking to the Future
Joshua reflects on his journey with pride: “My challenges have been talking to people, and Maxima has supported me to build my confidence in doing this. My consultant has helped me to build my skills and experience.”
Joshua’s journey with Maxima showcases how dedicated support and tailored programs can open doors to meaningful opportunities for young people. From volunteering to work experience, he’s not only gained skills but also a clear path forward.
Joshua continues to grow in his role and develop his confidence, his story is a reminder that every small step can lead to transformative change. As they say, “The journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step.” — Lao Tzu
