At just 17 years old, Destiny is breaking barriers and setting an inspiring example as Sportsgirl’s first-ever school-based trainee in Australia. Recently nominated by her school as the North Queensland Regional Finalist for School-Based Trainee of the Year, Destiny’s journey is a testament to hard work, dedication, and the power of opportunity.

Destiny began her traineeship in 2023 while in Year 10, thanks to a partnership between Sportsgirl Townsville and Maxima. Store Manager Steph played a pivotal role in bringing Destiny on board, marking a historic first for Sportsgirl, part of The Sussan Group.

‘It was a bit of trial and error at first, as this was new for all of us,’ Steph recalls. ‘But Destiny stood out immediately. She was quiet and introverted, but we saw her potential. We wanted to help her come out of her shell.’

And come out of her shell she has. From a shy teenager who avoided eye contact and gave one-word answers, Destiny has blossomed into a confident, skilled, and reliable team member.

‘Her growth has been incredible,’ Steph says. ‘She’s mastered payroll, banking, and customer service, completed her traineeship modules ahead of schedule, and maintained an impeccable attendance record. We’re so proud that she’s now a casual employee, working every Wednesday and Saturday.’

Reflecting on Destiny’s journey, Steph adds with a smile, ‘A year and a half ago, she would have been too shy to even do an interview.’

For Destiny, the traineeship has been more than just a stepping stone into the workforce; it has been a journey of self-discovery and cultural pride.

‘It means having self-confidence and showing other young First Nations people that there are so many opportunities out there,’ Destiny says. ‘I definitely see myself as a role model now. Maxima, Sportsgirl, and especially Steph have helped me become work-ready, learn business systems, and develop my skills.’

Destiny’s nomination for Trainee of the Year is a recognition of that growth. ‘Hard work and diligence have helped me achieve this. I’ve taken the role seriously, always asking for extra tasks and trying my best. I wanted to prove myself, and I’m so grateful for the opportunity.’

When asked about those who inspire her, Destiny said her family had taught her the value of hard work. ‘I also look up to my manager, Steph, and assistant manager Katie – they’ve inspired me so much.’

Destiny is already thinking about the impact she wants to make in the years to come. ‘I want to keep being a role model for young First Nations Australians,’ she says. ‘I’m passionate about completing my business certificate and giving back to my community.’

As Destiny prepares to attend the awards night alongside her Sportsgirl family – Steph, Katie, Nikki, and Holly – her story stands as a reminder of the difference that encouragement, opportunity, and belief can make in a young person’s life.
