Mapping their future – Michaela and Angus find dream jobs in data analytics

When firsttime job seeker Michaela was adjusting her resume to send to employers, her Maxima employment consultant noticed just how brilliant the computer whiz was with technology.

Knowing that Australian Spatial Analytics was looking for talented neurodiverse people like Michaela, Maxima quickly found the perfect entrylevel opportunity as a junior data analyst.
“This is my very first paid job when I first got the job I was very excited,” Michaela says.

“Before then, I felt like I was falling behind a lot of people my age. The fact that I haven’t been
given the opportunity to have a job until now made me feel like I was worthless, almost, at times.

“But now that I am contributing something, I’m feeling a lot better about myself, especiallybecause the camaraderie in here, everyone’s from similar places of struggling to hold down a
job so we can all relate and it just feels really good.

“Having a job it makes me feel independent, like I’m contributing to society.”

It was a similar job seeking journey for another Maxima customer, Angus, whose hobbies include mapmaking. Angus is part of the friendly geospatial analytics team at ASA and is now making digital maps for a range of clients. “It is nice to have those transferrable skills,” Angus says.

“Maxima has helped with training, helping me find volunteer work to build up my resume and ultimately finding this place through their connections.

“ASA are at the forefront of working with neurodiverse employees and so if you’re a jobseeker who is neurodiverse a company like ASA that is geared and equipped for it is a good place to
start if you can.

Together with Maxima and ASA, Angus is now working on his career goals.

“At the moment, it’s exploring my own space in this industry, which I wasn’t aiming for when I joined, it was just a job opportunity. Now that I’ve been involved in data analytics especially and
geospatial data, I’m starting to think about ways I can develop my skills and work in this space longterm.”

Maxima National Specialist for Strategic Growth and Innovation Tori Christian says employment consultants tailor support to individual needs.

“It’s not just about the job, it’s always about the journey and the career for people” Tori says.

“Maxima works with people all the way from when they very first start and are looking for a job and can provide that support, whether that be in the workplace, outside of work, or just being
that friendly person at the end of the phone for someone to debrief about their day.”
