By applying for a Governance traineeship with the City of Salisbury at just 15 years old, Monika made a decision that would change the trajectory of her life. At first, Governance was an unknown field for Monika, but she was determined to give it her all. Guided by Maxima’s training program, the journey transformed her into a rising star within the organisation, an inspiration to her peers and a testament to her commitment and curiosity.

Monika was recruited in 2023 and her enthusiasm to learn, exceptional client focus, and dedication quickly earned her the respect of her colleagues, leadership team, and even the City’s Elected Members. Through Maxima’s program, Monika was nominated for the Student of the Month Award for her outstanding contributions to sustainable work practices.

When successfully completing her Certificate III in Business Administration, her traineeship was converted into a temporary contract to fill a vacancy in the Governance Division. Within 16 months, Monika’s hard work landed her in a permanent role as a Governance Support Officer; an amazing achievement to help pave the way for a successful career.

Throughout her traineeship, Monika exceeded expectations by stepping up to minute formal council meetings, a challenging task even for seasoned staff. Monika demonstrated resilience, composure, and an incredible ability to manage the fast-paced environment, earning commendations from the Deputy Mayor for her efforts. Beyond this, Monika took on preparing meeting agendas, improving efficiencies in the process and showcased her strong attention to detail.

When the Audit and Risk Manager position became vacant, Monika stepped up once again. With no in-house guidance, she navigated the Internal Controls Review process, contacting software suppliers and liaising with assessors across the organisation. Her initiative ensured the process was completed successfully and set up for future success. This level of responsibility and capability is not common among trainees, yet Monika made it look effortless.

Monika’s learning went beyond just the theory, her hands-on experience gave her a thorough understanding of the Local Government Act and meeting regulations. Monika’s progression from full supervision to independent work reflected her determination to grow. Coordinating Council action sheets, managing the Mayor’s diary and drafting communications for Elected Members, Monika was not just a trainee but an integral part of the Governance team.

At just 17, Monika graduated from the program and secured a permanent role, proving that success comes in many forms. The Maxima program gave her a head start, but it was also her commitment and dedication that made her a respected professional in the local government sector. Monika’s story is an embodiment of Maxima’s tagline to help individuals “Reframe What’s Possible.”

Monika is an inspiration not only to her peers but also to countless high school students who participated in work experience programs at the City of Salisbury. Monika guided them with enthusiasm, showing what is possible when you pursue your interests with determination. Her journey stands as a shining example of the different pathways to professional success, made possible by combining personal dedication with the right support and opportunities.

Congratulations Monika, the entire team at Maxima is so proud of you for becoming the 2024 SA Apprentice/Trainee of the Year!
