What’s motivating you to get out of bed each day and keep pushing forward? You must be crystal clear on the “why” behind your goals so that you stay inspired when the going gets tough.
For Simone, that “why” was her children.
As a mother of six kids (Aged 6 to 18 years old), Simone’s decision to pursue a Certificate III in Business was driven by her dream of starting a foundation for young girls who have gone through the same hardships as she has. She wanted to gain practical skills and experience to achieve this noble goal.
Throughout her six-month training with Newmont, Simone had the opportunity to work in various departments, including S&ER, Legal, Supply Chain, Document Control, and the HR team. People in her team have nicknamed her “Queen of all trades” for her efforts to learn and pick up on new skills. Whether technical or soft skills, Simone’s versatility, and determination to excel shine in every area she tackles.
Simone’s personal growth and self-belief shone throughout her traineeship. Despite facing moments of doubt and attempting to manage a healthy work/ life balance, she persevered, constantly reminding herself of her “why” and the people she was doing it for. Her hidden talents and life experiences, such as patience, problem-solving, and multitasking, proved invaluable in caring for her well-being.
“The skills I gained throughout my training is how I communicate and engage with people from different nationalities, backgrounds & cultures.”
Simone’s enthusiasm for learning in different company departments has given her the skillset to adapt to change. This experience has allowed her to train new employees and educate her colleagues about Aboriginal culture. Simone’s contributions extended beyond her role. Her employer notes that “her ability to connect with people creates a harmonious and productive work environment.”
Simone has surpassed expectations, and now, with a completed certificate, she knows that she has the potential to achieve her long-term goals. Armed with practical experience and a newfound belief in herself, Simone is ready to explore the opportunities available for women and mothers like her.
As she looks forward to a stable future for her children, Simone also aspires to encourage and support First Nations girls and women, breaking intergenerational cycles and empowering them to step outside their comfort zones.
Through her involvement in community activities and supporting her family, Simone notes that she embodies the values of her First Nations identity.
“Family and community plays a big part in who we are as Aboriginal people. I have aunties, brothers and cousins looking up to me, knowing they can do the same.”
Her journey has not been without its share of obstacles and doubts, but her persistent spirit and desire for a better life have kept her motivated.
“I want to be an example to my family and community. If I can do it, they can too.”
