Maxima customer Sean, a former ward of the state, has successfully completed his Cert III in Community Services with the support of Maxima’s Greenslopes team in Queensland. Despite facing significant challenges including homelessness, substance abuse, and limited literacy skills, Sean has had nothing but determination in turning his life around.
Recovery Journey begins
Sean’s journey to recovery began in 2021, when he sought help for substance abuse and entered a rehab program. Following completion, he engaged with Maxima Disability Employment Services (DES), where he received comprehensive support and guidance. Recognising Sean’s potential, Maxima encouraged him to enroll in a Cert III in Community Services to develop new skills and open career opportunities.
Sean remarks “Maxima could see potential in me and spoke of the benefits I could offer the industry. With Christine’s continued encouragement I felt confident to continue with the course”
While initially facing academic hurdles due to literacy difficulties, Sean’s commitment, combined with the support of his Maxima case manager, Christine, enabled him to overcome these obstacles. Through tailored support, including weekly in-office sessions and tutoring, Sean completed his course.
“I am very proud of where I am now and what I have accomplished. I am very grateful for the support and that Maxima believed in me,” Sean said
Positive Impact
This achievement marks a significant milestone in Sean’s recovery journey. He has reconnected with family, found a supportive community with the Salvation Army, and developed a strong sense of purpose.
“I have since reconnected with my brother whom I have not seen for years, and we are starting a wonderful new relationship. I also had my dad message saying he is proud of me – something I have never heard in my life,” Sean shared.
Sean now feels more connected with his family and continues to strengthen his roots in the community, by volunteering with the Salvation Army, in hopes of helping people who are facing the same struggles he has.
He expressed, “My life has improved beyond what I believed I was able to do”
Looking Forward
Sean’s story is a great example of what we can achieve with the right support.
Maxima will continue supporting Sean as he embarks on his next step. Having completed his certification, he will explore employment opportunities with Maxima.
Sean has expressed keen interest in roles that allow him to utilise his personal experiences to support others, particularly young people facing similar challenges. His passion for helping others is evident, and Maxima is committed to assisting him in identifying suitable employment opportunities that align with his career aspirations.
Building on his strong academic foundation and a clear sense of purpose, Sean will undoubtedly make substantial contributions to the community.
“The world is my oyster, that is how I feel, although I am aware of small steps as my recovery continues. I share my story in the hope to encourage others and show that with the right people around you anything is possible.”
We are proud to reframe what’s possible in Sean’s story and remain committed to supporting other people on their path to independence. If you would like to see how Maxima can also help you reframe what’s possible, then click the link below:
