When Chris first came to Maxima through the Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) program, he had real technical experience in computer development and a clear goal to build a career in administration. What he lacked wasn’t ability, it was confidence.
As part of National Skills Week 2026 – Life Changing – we’re proud to share Chris’ story, a powerful reminder of how the right opportunity, paired with the right support, can open doors and change the course of someone’s career.
Like many jobseekers, nerves got the better of Chris in his initial interview with the City of West Torrens, making it difficult to showcase the knowledge and potential that sat beneath the surface.
A second chance was all it took.
Maxima Group Training Field Officer, Kathy Sayas, saw beyond the nerves and advocated for Chris, working closely with the Council to give him the chance to show what he could do. It didn’t take long for his ability to shine through.
Chris’ journey is also a great example of Maxima’s teams working together, and alongside our employer partners, to find the best outcome for an individual. Our Inclusive Employment Australia (IEA) team, who supported Chris from the very beginning, worked hand-in-hand with our Group Training (GT) team throughout his traineeship, ensuring he had the right support, guidance and opportunities at every stage of his journey with the City of West Torrens.
Throughout his 18-month traineeship, Chris worked across a range of departments, learning, developing and growing along the way. Stepping well outside his comfort zone, he pushed through the challenges and consistently showed up with a great attitude and willingness to learn.
His intelligence, genuine humility and easygoing nature helped him build strong relationships and make friends throughout the organisation.
Supervisor Renae was always delighted to share positive updates on his progress during Kathy’s visits, proud of the growth and confidence Chris built throughout his traineeship.
Today, Chris has completed his traineeship and successfully gained employment with the Information Management Team at the Council.
His story is a true testament to how lives can change when people are given the opportunity to develop their skills. Those skills have opened doors to his dream career.
